Cement Burns

There are many different professions that require employees to come in close contact with cement. As a building material, cement is both strong and durable, but it may also cause severe damage to anyone that is directly exposed to this substance. When cement powder is mixed with water, the chemical compounds become toxic, which can cause painful burns.

If you or someone you know has been injured while on the job, you may be eligible for financial support in the form of workers’ compensation. Contact the Pennsylvania workers’ compensation attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., at 610-667-7511 for information about how we can help you file your claim.

Injuries from Exposure to Cement

To form liquid cement, water is added to a powder containing calcium oxide. These two substances react with each other to form calcium hydroxide, which can cause physical injury to anyone in direct contact with liquid cement. Frustratingly for the workers that use this type of building material, the burns may not appear immediately, potentially allowing the damage to worsen as it is left untreated. Some signs that you may have a cement burn include:

  • Blistering skin
  • Discoloration of the injury site
  • Irritation
  • Physical pain

It is the responsibility of your employer to make sure that you are provided with the proper safety gear so that you can avoid painful cement burns. However, if your employer has ignored safety standards or health codes, leading to your injury, you may be entitled to additional workers’ comp.
