What to do when a dental accident occurs

In the event that a dental accident does occur on the job, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • If you bite your lip or tongue, clean the area and apply ice to reduce swelling. If the bleeding is severe or does not stop after compression, go to the emergency room and seek medical assistance.
  • If one of your teeth gets knocked out, grab the detached tooth by the crown and gently clean it off, making sure to not scrub or detach any of the roots. If possible put the tooth back into the socket as you seek dental attention. If not possible, stick the tooth in a glass of milk and carefully transport it with you. Get to a dental office as soon as possible so they can attempt to reattach the tooth.
