Freezer Injuries
Many companies use large, industrial, walk-in freezers for storage of various items and products. Some companies may need to keep chemicals at a very low temperature, others store food products at or below freezing, and some places need freezing temperatures as a step in production, like flash-freezing.
Workers have to be in and out of these freezers very often, and they can be a significant source of injury. Freezing injuries like frostbite, hypothermia, and even death can occur if these freezers are not handled properly or if employees are improperly trained or prepared to work with them.
In some cases, a freezer defect or malfunction can cause problems. If the temperature regulation system is broken, or the thermometer is inaccurate, then the workers may not know exactly what temperature they’re walking into. In those cases, they may spend longer in the freezer than is safe, and can be injured because of it.
Also, disastrous accidents can occur if a worker is somehow locked inside the freezer. Spending a small amount of time at that low of a temperature, especially without arctic gear and significant preparation, can lead to serious injury and death. A person would not be able to survive for very long if they were locked in one of these freezers.
