The Hazards of Falling Objects
Falling objects can result in severe head and brain injuries and even death. These injuries are most common in construction sites but can occur in almost any work environment. They most frequently result from disorganized workspaces or material handling accidents.
There are measures that can be taken to prevent falling object accidents. Housekeeping is an important part of reducing the risk of workplace injuries caused by falling objects. Storage spaces containing large or tall stacks of boxes or materials can cause significant hazards. Boxes can slide and fall. Aisles, racks, hangers, passageways, door, and overhead storage spaces can cause danger when used for disorderly storage.
By adhering to safe storage practices it is possible to decrease the likelihood of falling object injuries. Some other tips to prevent falling object accidents include:
- Do not leave loose items or tools on window ledges, shelves, cranes, or working platforms
- Secure any loads that will be lifted to a high position
- Do not remove screens or guards that come as part of machinery
- Give adequate warning when working above another worker
- If loads are left in high places, proper scaffolding should be put in place
- Tools used in high places should be secured to prevent falling
- Canopies or nets can be put in place to catch any items that do fall
- Workers should be given protective equipment for use in case they are struck by a falling object
