The Health Risks of Mold in the Workplace
Mold can be quite hazardous and is a situation that should be addressed quickly upon discovery. Fungal growth spreads very quickly, and, most importantly, needs moisture to grow. The reason that it is often associated with bathrooms, water leaks in walls, or air conditioning vents is because there is enough moisture there to allow the mold to grow.
When people are exposed to mold, usually through inhalation of the spores, there are a variety of health effects that may result. Many are relatively minor, like congestion, cough, or runny nose. Some can be more serious, like a rash, asthma, nausea, and severe headaches.
Mold can be dangerous because it is not always immediately visible. Especially in air conditioning units, where the spores are at a higher likelihood for being airborne and inhaled, they will not always be visible when they first begin to grow. Mold spores can be more obvious and easier to see in places like bathrooms, office walls, or ceiling panels, and it is important that they be thoroughly cleaned as soon as they appear in order to minimize exposure.
It is the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe working environment, and that extends to clean working conditions that are free from mold.
