Types of Back Injuries

Back injuries can have a wide range of variability in terms of type, pain, duration, and rehabilitation. Some back injuries can be relatively mild, requiring only a few days for recovery. Other back injuries, however, can be much more severe, requiring years of recovery and rehabilitation. Sometimes, recovery from a back injury may not be possible, resulting in permanent damage.

Work environments ranging from offices to construction sites can create dangerous situations for employees, and back injuries are common types of workplace injuries. If you or someone you love has suffered a back injury on the job, call the devoted team of Pennsylvania workers’ compensation attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., today at 610-667-7511.

Common Workplace Back Injuries

Workplace back injuries result from trauma to the bones, muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the back. There are a variety of back injuries, each resulting in different effects on the individual. The most common types of back injuries include:

  • Back sprains – consist of damaged muscles and/or tendons that can be either acute or chronic
  • Back strains – occur when the ligaments of the back suffer from damage that may be either acute or chronic
  • Spinal fractures – a serious injury that happens when there are cracks or breaks in the bones of the spinal column that can lead to paralysis depending on the damage sustained by the spinal cord
  • Herniated discs – this uncomfortable form of back pain occurs when a weak disc or discs in the spinal column become loose and causes the central portion of the spine to bulge

Frustratingly, back injuries can leave you facing time away from work as you handle recoveries such as physical therapy or even surgery to correct your back problem. However, you may be entitled to workers’ comp to help you during this difficult time.
