Pennsylvania Working to Fix Unemployment Fund

Posted on April 27th, 2009 No Comments

Business leaders and government officials worked together in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Friday in hopes of coming up with a solution to deal with the state's unemployment-compensation trust fund.  This unemployment-compensation trust fund is being dried up because of the recession.  A dramatic rise in individuals hoping to receive payments has put the entire fund in jeopardy.

The fund is running low on cash,  and may receive help from the federal government.  The help from the federal government requires, however,  that the state increase the eligibility of benefits in the upcoming years.  This means that the state will have to decide if it will be able to pay off all the workers now and have to pay more in the future, or if it will try and fix the problem without federal assistance.

Worker Has Three Story Fall in SUV

Posted on April 22nd, 2009 1 Comment

A parking attendant worker had an unusual accident in New York on Monday.

Sometime in the afternoon, the parking attendant went to retrieve a car for a customer.  In the process of getting the $70,000 dollar Mercedes-Benz SUV, the accident occurred.

Instead of placing the car in forward, the car was put in reverse.  The SUV then floored backwards and out of a parking garage window.  The SUV fell nearly 30 feet to a court yard below near New York University.

Amazingly, the man was not seriously injured, but was taken to a hospital for evaluation since it was nearly a three story fall.

Air National Guardsman Sues Employer Over Injury

Posted on April 22nd, 2009 2 Comments

A Pennsylvania Air National Guardsman is in the process of suing his former employer for having his job terminated.  The man is claiming that he lost his job as a result of an injury that he received while on duty.

The company in question is UPMC.  The man worked in the UPMC Health Plan and UPMC Health Benefits areas.

The  man suffered an injury while on duty with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard.  This injury required the man to take time off from his job to have surgery and recover.  He claims that the company was not cooperative with these requests.  Later on, the man was then told that his job position had been eliminated from the company.  The man claims that he was the only person from the company to lose his job, and claims that it was because of his injury.

Number of Worker Compensation Claims Down

Posted on April 17th, 2009 No Comments

With the economy in a  recession,  it has been noted that the number of workers' compensation claims has gone down.

This decrease in individuals attempting to claim workers' compensation can be a reflection of the fear and the uncertainty involved.  Many people do not want to file claims because they fear retaliation by an employer. In this difficult economy, many believe that it could be the excuse needed to terminate employment.

This type of fear is not needed.  If you have a legitimate injury that occurred on the job, you deserve compensation until you are fully healed and recovered.

The state is urging caution in work zones.   Over the next few months,  the state of Pennsylvania will receive over $3 billion dollars to undertake highway infrastructure projects.  This means that more workers will be on the roads of Pennsylvania.

With more workers on the road,  more accidents could possibly happen.  State officials are urging motorists to take more caution when approaching or driving through work zones.
