Masks Important for Many Jobs

Posted on June 29th, 2009 No Comments

A protective mask is important for many jobs where harsh chemicals or other types of noxious items are present.  A workers safety could be badly damaged if exposed to harmful chemicals without proper protection.

It should always be a priority of a company to protect a worker with the proper items when necessary.  If a job requires a gas mask, or a ventilator of some sort, the equipment should be provided to avoid serious and long-term damage.

If you or someone you know has been injured while on the job, please contact the Pennsylvania workers' compensation attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. today at 610-667-7511 for more information about our legal services.

Worker Struck and Killed in Roadside Project

Posted on June 24th, 2009 1 Comment

A construction worker that was taking part in a roadside work project has recently been struck and killed in Texas.  The accident took place early morning in a construction area that had marking and signs warning other drivers.

This accident is one of many of its type that occur every work year.  Roadside workers face unique challenges and risks when they are working outside near vehicles that are travelling at high speeds.  A lot of their safety is in the hands of drivers on the road.  Many projects try and take all the safety precautions, but sometimes it still is not enough to protect against bad drivers.

Ammonia Leak Kills One, Injures Other

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 No Comments

An ammonia leak in a poultry facility in North Carolina has recently killed and injured several workers. This type of accident is common among meatpacking  plants as ammonia is used in the processing of many food items.

One worker was killed in this accident, and several others have been injured.  Ammonia can be overpowering for many, and can burn as it is inhaled into the body.

The company has stated that grief counselors will be at the plant on Monday for employees.  The incident is currently being investigating by several organizations including the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Undocumented Workers Awarded Over $3.5 Million in Damages

Posted on June 19th, 2009 No Comments

Two undocumented workers in New York were recently awarded over $3.5 million dollars in damages for two separate incidents.

One of the workers was from Mexico, and the other was from Ecuador.

The worker from Mexico was awarded $2.5 million in damages from the result of an accident when a pipe the man was working on exploded on him, causing injuries.  The man has said that he suffers nightmares from the incident.

The other worker, from Ecuador, suffered injuries when a steel beam fell on the mans left portion of the body.

These awards highlight that once an individual begins work for a company, that they are offered a basic level of protections against injuries and accidents.

Intimidation to Keep Workers Quiet About An Injury

Posted on June 17th, 2009 No Comments

Some companies will try and intimidate a worker who was recently injured.  These types of companies try and cut the costs of care by trying to force a worker into either being reluctant to file a claim,  or to make the worker see the company approved doctor who will not make a proper diagnosis.

Some companies have been known to demote a worker and give them either a harder or more uncomfortable job after an injury in hopes of forcing a worker to quit.

This type of intimidation is wrong, and causes a lot of problems to an individual who was already suffering from an injury.  These types of employers need to face the consequences of their actions.

Injury Intimidation Against Workers

Posted on June 15th, 2009 No Comments

After an accident,  many workers are confused about the proper path they need to take.  Treatment for their injuries should be the first and  most important step to take.  If an individual is having trouble receiving treatment for an accident that occurred while on the job,  action needs to be taken.

Many companies will try and confuse or manipulate a worker after an accident.  These attempts to change the events are used for the companies advantage following an accident, and often neglect the actual injuries of the worker.

If you have had an accident, it is important that the company accurately documents the accident and provides the opportunity for treatment and recovery.

Burn Injuries Common for Plant Workers

Posted on June 10th, 2009 No Comments

Burn injuries are one of the most common types of injuries that a worker may suffer from.  Burn injuries can occur in a variety of ways.

To begin,  a traditional burn may involve machinery or other equipment that reaches extremely hot temperatures.  These injuries can vary from 1st degree to 3rd degree burns.

Another type of burn injury is a chemical burn that is suffered.  Many workers have to handle hazardous chemicals.  These chemicals can sometimes cause burning the instant that it comes into contact with human skin.

These types of burn injuries are different, but have similar traits.  If a worker has either of these injuries,  the worker will need time to heal and recover from the accident.

Falls Injure Many Workers

Posted on June 8th, 2009 No Comments

One of the most common types of worker accidents involve falling from heights.  These falls normally injure the worker seriously depending on the height which the fall occurs from.

It is important that if you are a worker, and working from a height  to use the proper safety policy.  When possible,  use harnesses and other devices that would prevent a fall.  Proper footwear should also be used to prevent slipping.

If you are a worker that works from heights,  be sure to ask the supervisor what the proper protocols and procedures are.

Factory Machinery Poses Risk to Workers

Posted on June 5th, 2009 No Comments

Machinery at factories can pose a risk to workers in many different
ways.  Industrial machinery normally requires training to properly
understand the equipment.  This training is needed because of the risk
of getting a hand, or other body part in the machinery can seriously
injure a worker.

Some machinery is designed to reduce accidents
to the best of the manufacturers ability.  However,  some equipment
have a flawed design that is not noticed until the equipment is being
used on a large scale.  If you are injured because of machinery while
on the job,  take the proper steps to ensure that you are treated.

$5 Million Award to Worker Thrown Out

Posted on June 3rd, 2009 5 Comments

The Supreme Court of the United States has recently thrown out and rejected the previous award of $5 million by a jury to a former CSX worker who had been exposed to dangerous chemicals and asbestos while on the job.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the judge presiding in the case had improperly gave instructions to the jury. One of the main reasons for the rejection is that the judge had to
inform the jury that the worker had to prove that he was "genuinely"
worried about developing cancer in the future from the exposure to the
toxic agents.    This lack of proper instructions was enough to toss out the awarded amount, and send the case back to trial in the lower courts.
