Construction injuries may be underreported, according to national report

Posted on October 12th, 2011 No Comments

A new report shows that the number of injuries in the construction industry may have been underestimated. The report, “Injury Underreporting Among Small Establishments in the Construction Injury” will be published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

The report points out that injury data from workers that are self-employed or federally employed has not been collected. Both of these groups of workers account for nearly one-fourth of the construction workforce.

Other reasons that injuries may go underreported is due to changes that OSHA made in 1995 and in 2001 in the way that they keep records. Because a large portion of the construction  industry are small establishments, it is important to look into the issue of underreporting in order to get a more accurate number on the amount of injuries that occur each year.
