No injuries were reported as a result of a construction accident that occurred at the World Trade Center site.
According to officials, the accident occurred when a cable on the crane snapped causing 20 tons of steel to fall nearly 40 feet to the ground. The steel landed on a flatbed truck that was luckily unoccupied at the time.
One worker was checked by the local fire department, but further medical attention was not required. Many workers reported seeing the cable snap and the beams fall, but the location was not open to the public so there were not many people around. Culture of the workplace can have impact injury rates
Posted on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012 at 6:05 pm
A new study done at the University of Georgia has showed that the culture of a workplace can have a serious impact on the amount of workplace injuries that occur.
Each year, six thousand Americans are killed each year at the workplace and the new study suggests that a culture of the workplace can have a large influence on increasing or reducing accidents.
“We’ve known for some time that certain occupations are more dangerous than others due to a variety of physical and other hazards,” said study author Dave DeJoy, Ph.D. “But in the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that management and organizational factors also play a critical role. That is, actions taken or not taken at the organizational level can either set the stage for injuries or help prevent them.”
If a worker’s perception of a workplace environment has a positive outlook on the safety element, the amount of workplace injuries could reduce by up to 32 percent.
Workplace injuries are a very serious issue and determining why they happen is the first step in preventing them. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of a workplace accident, you need experienced representation on your side. Other citations were given to the company for failing to train employees on equipment use and evaluate the work area prior to the accident. The total amount for the violations is $31,175. This employee’s death was the company’s second fatality in 2011.
Increasing age of workforce may not impact workers’ compensation benefits
Posted on Thursday, January 5th, 2012 at 9:31 pm
Many workers’ compensation insurers have been concerned with the aging workforce having a negative impact on workers’ compensation rates, but it may not have as bad an impact as some first thought.
According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), elderly workers may have higher costs because their injuries may have be more severe, but they also have higher premiums for the injuries.
A recent study released “Workers’ Compensation and the Aging Workforce,” the age difference in work injuries has fallen and it is not longer always true that younger workers have higher injury rates.
The study also found that the severity of injuries in age groups has more a difference in today’s world. For example, older workers have knee and rotator cuff injuries and younger workers have more back injuries and ankle sprains. Officials have said that the overall findings show that the aging workers may have less of an impact than was previously thought.
