Pennsylvania egg plant recognized by OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has recognized  the Papetti Hygrade Egg Products Inc. in Pennsylvania for excelling in safety and health practices.

The agency’s Voluntary Protection Program hands out the star award to places that make sure their workplace is as safe as possible. The area director for OSHA attended the award ceremony that took place in the facility in Klingerstown.

The company is a food plant that makes frozen egg products. OSHA recognizes federal sites that have lower than average injury and illness rates.

Man killed in Pittsburgh workplace accident

A local tree service employee was killed after a workplace accident occurred. The 46-year-old man died because complications from a thermal injury from an electrocution incident.

According to officials, the man was working when the top of his foot hit an electrical line while he was attempting to cut down a tree.

The accident occurred last Wednesday and the man was pronounced dead at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh on Saturday. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced that they will be investigating the incident.

Industrial worker seriously injured on job site

An industrial worker suffered serious internal and arm injuries after an accident occurred in Streetsboro on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when a 43-year-old man was working at the job site and a large piece of steel fell onto his arm. When emergency crews arrived they saw the man had a serious laceration on his arm.

He was transported by helicopter to Akron City Hospital in order to be treated. He also suffered serious internal injuries in the accident. There is no current news on his condition at this time.

Man killed in work-related accident at Edie Waste Inc. facility

A man was killed after a Pennsylvania work-related accident occurred on June 8.

According to officials, the accident occurred at the East Donegal Township Facility of Edie Waste Inc. just before 11 a.m. The man was found by a co-worker after he somehow became trapped underneath a vehicle while working in the garage of the facility.

Emergency crews were then called to the scene and the coroner later pronounced the man dead. A full investigation is underway at this time in order to find out what caused the man to be trapped underneath the vehicle. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also expected to conduct an investigation.

New York recycling company fined by OSHA

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Buffalo Recycling Enterprises, LLC, with 15 alleged workplace safety violations after an incident that occurred in October 2010 that seriously injured in employee’s arm.

The man’s arm was lacerated when it got caught into a conveyor belt while he was working to clear out a paper jam. According to OSHA, the recycler was cited for having hazardous energy and hazards for a bloodborne pathogen.

These two citations can cause traumatic injury from being caught in machinery that will not shut down properly and from not protecting workers from exposure to disease.

Explosion at a natural gas well causes injury to three

An explosion at a natural gas drilling site injured three workers. The accident occurred on February 23 at 6:30 p.m. when the storage tank at the drilling site caught fire and exploded.

The site is located at Independence Township as the workers tested the active gas. Chesapeake Appalachia LLC, operates the well site and said that the 500-barrel storage tanks exploded as a result of flash fire that caught fire to five of the tanks and then ignited all the others.

Nearly 20 fire crews responded to the scene and it took nearly three hours to get the fire out. All three employees were hospitalized to be treated for their injuries.

Power plant blast injures six people

Six people were injured in a power plant blast in Indiana County. The explosion occurred at the Edison Mission Group at 7:45 a.m. when a 6-inch pipe, containing high pressure steam, burst.

The unit was shut down right after the pipe busted because of safety systems that have been put into place. The burst caused an explosion of steam, but it did not cause a fire.

Three workers were transported to a burn unit by helicopter and the other three were driven to a local hospital where they were treated and released. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation.

One person killed, three injured in Philadelphia gas explosion

An explosion at the Tacony Section injured three people and killed a PGW gas employee. The explosion occurred in the evening at the plant which is in the middle of Disston Street and Torresdale Avenue.

Fire crews came to the scene when the smell of gas was reported and when gas was seen bubbling through the pavement. Than an explosion erupted and after the fire was contained and a 19-year-old worker was found dead.

Three gas workers were transported to the hospital and one firefighter was also taken in for treatment. The explosion is still under investigation at this time.

NY Paper mill fined after death of worker

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined Norampac Industries Inc. nearly $70,000 after the death of a worker that was killed at their Niagara, NY plant.

The accident occurred in May 2010, as the worker at the paper mill became trapped between a metal barrier and a large paper roll. OSHA found after an investigation that it was the company that had serious violations that caused the death of the man. The area where the metal barrier and paper roll intersected lacked proper guarding to protect the workers.

Flammable oils caused Penn. well blast

According to a fire marshal, flammable fumes from oil that remained in a storage tank is what was the cause for the well blast that killed two workers.

The explosion occurred at a well near Pittsburgh owned by Huntley & Huntley Inc. in late July. The well produced methane gas but used oil out of the ground in order to do so. The leaky tank where the oil was stored was emptied before welders were working near it but because it was hot day vapor began to fill the tank.

The welders were working to repair the tiny holes when a spark ignited the vapor. The tank than rocketed over 100-feet in the air. Officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating this fatal workplace accident.
