A fatal workplace accident that occurred in June has lead to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration citing a California-based utility service contractor for their alleged negligence.

The Davey Tree Surgery Co. was cited for failing to adhere to guidelines and the result is that a man was struck by a falling tree. One citation was given because the company did not have the right first aid materials and did not make sure that the workers kept a safe distance from the trees.

Other citations were given to the company for failing to train employees on equipment use and evaluate the work area prior to the accident. The total amount for the violations is $31,175. This employee’s death was the company’s second fatality in 2011.

Increasing age of workforce may not impact workers’ compensation benefits

Posted on January 5th, 2012 No Comments

Many workers’ compensation insurers have been concerned with the aging workforce having a negative impact on workers’ compensation rates, but it may not have as bad an impact as some first thought.

According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), elderly workers may have higher costs because their injuries may have be more severe, but they also have higher premiums for the injuries.

A recent study released “Workers’ Compensation and the Aging Workforce,” the age difference in work injuries has fallen and it is not longer always true that younger workers have higher injury rates.

The study also found that the severity of injuries in age groups has more a difference in today’s world. For example, older workers have knee and rotator cuff injuries and younger workers have more back injuries and ankle sprains. Officials have said that the overall findings show that the aging workers may have less of an impact than was previously thought.

OSHA fines salons for exposing stylists to formaldehyde

Posted on December 15th, 2011 No Comments

Recently, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has made an effort to prevent stylists and salon workers from being exposed to formaldehyde in their workplace.  Investigators have found that many salons and beauty schools continue to use products with formaldehyde in ways that violate OSHA’s formaldehyde regulations.

Formaldehyde is most often found in straightening and smoothing hair products.  Already this year, OSHA officials have cited 23 salons and beauty schools in Pennsylvania and 7 other states with formaldehyde violations.

The chemical first caught the attention of the federal workplace safety agency in 2010 when a stylist wrote them a complaint stating that she had suffered eye irritation, nosebleeds, and breathing difficulty after using a product called Brazilian Blowout.  The hair product, like many others, does not say it contains formaldehyde on the container, but identifies the chemical by other names like “methylene glycol,”methylene oxide,” “paraform,” “formic aldehyde,” and more.

Heath issues related to formaldehyde are most often are caused by absorbing the chemical through the skin and inhaling it in the air.  Formaldehyde exposure can lead to respiratory problems, eye and nose irritation, allergic reactions, and cancer.
