Pennsylvania Short-Term Disability Attorney
All it takes is a moment of bad luck. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or turning your head for just a second can lead to an injury that keeps you out of work beyond the scope of accruable sick and vacation days. Although the injury may not permanently affect your ability to perform your job responsibilities, it may restrict your physical or emotional well-being for long enough to be problematic.
Workers’ compensation, of course, is only available if the disabling injury occurs on the job or due to an ongoing aspect of the job, and since as many as 60 % of incidents that generate significant disability occur outside of the workplace it becomes clear that there is a need for other forms of coverage.
The Pennsylvania workers’ compensation lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., can help you to pursue all avenues of benefits that are available to you. Contact us at 610-667-7511.
Different Short-Term/Temporary Disability Options
As mentioned above, if the injury that temporarily disables you is directly related to the performance of job-related functions and occurs in the workplace, you may receive workers’ compensation benefits through your employer’s workers’ compensation insurance. These benefits are designed to pay for medical expenses derived from care given for work-related injuries and illnesses, and they also render financial compensation for lost wages. However, since many of the incidents in question occur independently of one’s job, the odds are that this route may not be made available to you.
For this reason, many employers offer short-term disability coverage as a benefit to employees, whether that the employer or the employee pays for the coverage. Some states require employers to carry this insurance, but Pennsylvania does not, so as an informed worker in the Keystone state you might have selected your own private short-term disability insurance. Each policy has different terms, but generally the payments from the benefit constitute a percentage of your wage (no more than 70% usually) and will last for no longer than the specified maximum length.
